Slowey, a right-handed pitcher for the Fort Myers Miracle, has gotten off to a solid start, with a 1.93 ERA, 29 strikeouts and just two walks in 23 1-3 innings.
The Minnesota Twins drafted Slowey in the second round of the 2005 June draft out of Winthrop University.
Question: Although you're off to a great start, you still don't have a win, with a 0-0 record. Are you upset with your team's offense?
Answer: I have all the faith in the world that they can hit. Our season is 140 games. The last thing I want to do after four starts is starting questioning why I don't have a win yet. I just want to put our team in a position to win.
Question: You went to Winthrop. How close did you watch your basketball team, which nearly knocked off Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA tournament?
Answer: We don't have a football team at Winthrop. The basketball team is really the biggest thing on campus.
Question: How did you end up going to Winthrop (located in Rock Hill, S.C.), having grown up in Pittsburgh?
Answer: I went to a baseball tournament in Myrtle Beach (S.C.) my senior year of high school, and their coaches saw me there.
Question: You did pretty well in school (3.96 grade-point average, major in international business, minor in Spanish), but you're one year short of your degree. Do you plan on finishing it?
Answer: I will probably do it one semester at a time in the offseason when I can. I want to finish what I start. I only got one B my freshman year, in business calculus.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Saul Rivera
Then: In 2000, the right-handed pitcher compiled an 8-1 record, with a 3.58 ERA, for the Miracle, striking out 45 batters in 37 2-3 innings.
Now: Rivera pitches in the Washington Nationals' organization. He spent April 15-19 in the major leagues before being optioned back to Triple-A New Orleans.
