Sarasota earns first victory in nine games

Special to The News-Press

The Fort Myers Miracle offense was finally stymied as the defense of the Sarasota Red Sox did them in during a 6-2 Sarasota win Saturday night at the Lee County Sports Complex.

The Red Sox ended an eight-game Florida State League losing streak while ending Fort Myers’ three-game winning streak.

The middle infield combination of Ignacio Suarez and Hanley Ramirez made play after play to kill three different Fort Myers rallies by the Miracle.

In the first with Alex Romero on second and one out, Suarez made a diving play on a ball hit by Ben Pattee for the second out. Danny Matienzo hit one up the middle and this time Ramirez made a diving play.

The Miracle took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a single from Matienzo and an RBI triple from Jose Morales.

The Red Sox got to starter Francisco Liriano in the fifth inning, batting around and scoring five runs. Liriano walked the first two men before giving up a three-run homer to Jim Buckley. One out later, he walked Suarez and gave up a single to Ramirez. Two wild pitches and a single later, the Red Sox led 5-1.

Fort Myers got a run in the sixth on Morales’ fourth homer of the season.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the five-game, two-city series this afternoon back up in Sarasota.

The Miracle send right-hander Matt Yeatman against Red Sox lefty Luis Mendoza.
