Fort Myers Miracle News

Special to the Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the Florida State League again Thursday night forcing the Fort Myers Miracle and Tampa Yankees to suspend play in the second inning at Hammond Stadium.

The Miracle held a 3-0 lead when play was stopped, thanks to a two-run home run by Erik Lis and a sacrifice-fly off the bat of Jeff Christy.

The first thunderstorm delayed the first pitch by 21 minutes. The second storm hit 45 minutes later. The Miracle have runners at first and second, with two outs, and Steve Tolleson at the plate.

The suspended game resume at 5:05 p.m. Friday. A seven-inning game follows the completion of the suspended game.

New York Yankee slugger Jason Giambi is scheduled to be the designated hitter in the second game for Tampa. He is making his first minor league rehab appearance.

Giambi has been out of action since May 30 with plantar fascitis of his left foot. The 36-year-old was hitting .262 with seven homers and 23 RBI in 45 games when he went on the disabled list.

Tampa shortstop Reegie Corona (left) nearly gets in the way as Miracle Brian Dinkelman is forced out at second base by second baseman Kevin Russo, who throws on toward first base too late to double up Steve Tolleson. Tolleson scored on the next play when Erik Lis hit a home run over the right field fence putting the Miracle ahead 2-0 in the second inning before a lengthy rain delay Thursday night.
