The Vero Beach Devil Rays scored eight unanswered runs on Thursday night in a rain-shortened 8-2 win over the Fort Myers Miracle in Florida State League play at Hammond Stadium.

After a nearly two-hour delay and an attempt to get the field back in playing shape, the game was called after the seventh-inning stretch due to unplayable field conditions.

The Miracle scored a pair of runs in the opening inning to grab an 2-0 lead. After Luis Ugueto and Erik Lis drew two-out walks, Edward Ovalle cleared the bases with a triple to score the only Miracle runs of the night.

The Rays tied the game in the second inning as Rhyne Hughes delivered an RBI double to score Patrick Cottrell, who led off the inning with a single to right. Hughes later scored the tying run on Jackson Brennan’s fielder’s choice to second.

Former Miracle player Erold Andrus gave Vero Beach the lead for good, leading off the third with his team-leading eighth home run. Two more visitor runs would come across on a Miracle error and an Aaron Sisk sacrifice fly, giving the Rays a three-run lead.

A Rays run in the sixth and a pair in the seventh rounded out scoring.
