Fort Myers' losing streak reaches five gamesBy SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-PRESS The Fort Myers Miracle's losing streak reached five games on Sunday afternoon as they were thrashed 11-5 by the Jupiter Hammerheads at the Lee County Sports Complex. Fort Myers has fallen from second place into third in the Florida State League's Western Division during the losing streak. The Miracle took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Denard Span extended his hitting streak to nine games with an infield single. He stole second and scored on Matt Moses' RBI single. The Hammerheads scored three in the fourth off Miracle starter Errol Simonitsch. With one out, Lee Mitchell doubled. Angel Molina singled Mitchell to third, and with two outs, Juan Figueroa doubled them both home. The next batter, Patrick Arlis, hit a slow grounder to third that Moses charged, but threw wild to first, allowing Figueroa to score. Fort Myers tied it at 3 with a run in the fourth on an RBI double from Kyle Phillips and an RBI fielder's choice by Kyle Geiger in the fifth. Simonitsch left after five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out nine. Reliever Julio DePaula took over in the sixth and got torched for five runs in 2/3 of an inning. Jupiter sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs on an RBI double by Figueroa, an RBI single by Jose Campusano, two walks with the bases loaded and an RBI fielder's choice by Mitchell. Span finished the day 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, two stolen bases and a walk. Moses was 2-for-3 with an RBI before injuring himself breaking up a double play and having to leave the game. The Miracle now head on the road to take on the Vero Beach Dodgers at 7 tonight at Holman Stadium. Fort Myers will start right-hander Scott Tyler (2-3, 5.08 ERA). Webposted May 23, 2005 |
