NEW BRITAIN - Right-hander Adam Harben, slated to pitch one of the games in Friday's doubleheader, apparently will be the player to be named in Friday's trade that sent Phil Nevin to the Twins.

Harben, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound native of Little Rock, Ark., was 4-9 with a 3.96 ERA for the Rock Cats. The 23-year-old was the Twins' 15th round selection in the June 2002 draft.

Harben, who is on the Twins' 40-man roster, would have to clear waivers before the deal is official. He was slated to start the first game Friday night but was in his street clothes charting the game instead.

Prospect Watch

Drafted in the 15th round of the 2002 draft out of Central Arkansas Christian High School, Adam Harben began his professional career with the Gulf Coast League Twins. He finished off the season 3rd in wins. He began the 2003 season in extended spring training, but skipped Elizabethton and was promoted to Quad City in mid-June. Drafted more for raw power than for talent, the 6'5 right hander is still mechanically sound.

He earned a 5-6 record with a 4.33 ERA in 2003, combining a excellent fast ball with a power curveball.

The Little Rock, Arkansas native earned more recognition in 2004 as he stayed at the Low-A level, learning to work a change-up in between his fast ball and had some good success that way. He still has some control issues with the his off-speed pitches such as the aforementioned change-up and a slider he's been working on.

Expected to start the season with Fort Myers of the Florida State League with a mid-season promotion to New Britain if he keeps pitching as well as he did last season.

He did reasonable well when I saw him pitch on Saturday, but the control issues were evident as he opened up with a walk, and allowed a runner to advance on a wild pitch.

John Sickels and Baseball America regard him highly as a prospect and he's generally considered one of the best 10 pitchers in the Twins system after an impressive 2004 season with the Swing (3.09 ERA and 10.8 K/9).

Adam Harben named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week

Adam Harben has been the FSL pitcher for the week for the period ended May 30th, 2005.

Harben had a no-hit bid broken up with one out in the eighth inning of a 1-0 win over Brevard County on Sunday. He fanned the final batter he faced to give him a season-high 12 strikeouts in the game. While not quite as sharp in first outing of the week, the 21-year-old also picked up the victory in a 15-3 win over Vero Beach on May 24. The Twins' 2002 15th-round pick allowed two runs on three hits in 6 1/3 innings. Perhaps the most promising sign in his no-hit bid was the fact that Harben only walked two batters in 7 2/3 innings. The 6-foot-5 right-hander leads the Florida State League in walks with 30.

Harben is the first of the Miracle players honored by the Florida State League this season.
