How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Miracle Fans starts with one question: will this fan work in the room of the person shopping for it? That means the size of the space, where the fan will sit and how much noise you can accept.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your room

A small bedroom, an open living room and a two-car garage each need a different fan.

We check the fan type, height, blade or grille size, airflow and power each maker lists. When your room limits the choice, we say what to look for.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at airflow figures, speed settings, oscillation range, tilt, motor type, timers, remotes, app control, height and what comes in the box.

Makers describe their fans in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at owner feedback

We read through what owners report after using a fan. We look for patterns, like rattles that start after a few weeks, remotes that stop pairing, dust that builds up inside tower vents and noise on the lowest speed.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A fan that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Fan models change often, and many come in look-alike versions with similar names. We check each model number, and we only link new units.

We skip any fan with a known recall, and we check makers' recall pages and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every fan we cover.

A fan moves air across your skin and around a room. It doesn't cool the air itself, and we make no claims about sleep, breathing or health.

For cleaning, running a fan while you're away or using one in a dusty shop, follow the maker's manual.
